Metal Detecting Along the Civil War Corduroy Road

by admin on July 31, 2009

In this episode, we find ourselves in Virginia in the middle of the site of a large Civil War Union Army winter camp. Here we have located an old corduroy road bed at about 4 feet down, give or take a foot or two. On this beautiful day many remnants of the Civil War would be unearthed. So grab your shovel and come join the dig!

This is the one that I submitted recently into a film contest. Thanks goes out to everyone that gave me suggestions on which clips to use.

everything that we …
everything that we “amateurs” did has been photographed and recorded and much of what was recovered, including a small section of the corduroy road, are now on display in a nearby museum for all to enjoy and learn from hopefully for generations to come.

fyi – this site is …
fyi – this site is now built over and serving as a school – where this road was located is now part of a large concrete parking lot. archaeologists did get involved in surveying this property as part of a last ditch effort to learn what they could prior to the beginning of construction.

Great video! I always wondered how Plank Road in Fredericksburg got its name. Thanks for the lesson. Shame the site has been developed.
